Volunteer for a Two-night Backpacking Service Trip

The Friends of Haleakalā National Park seeks enthusiastic and fit volunteers for a strenuous two-night backpacking service trip into Haleakalā National Park’s Wilderness Areas from Wednesday to Friday, August 14-16. Volunteers will hike into the crater and stay in the Kapalaoa Wilderness Cabin. Anticipated work, under the direction of the National Park Service, may include removing invasive plant species to protect native plants and nēnē habitat. The entrance fee is waived, and the trip is free except for sharing some costs of evening meals in the cabin.
Participants must be physically capable of being in the outdoors (sun/ heat/ cold), and at higher elevations, walking on uneven terrain up to 5 miles each shift, and carrying a backpack with a sleeping bag, a share of the food, and other personal items. Safety equipment and tools are provided by Haleakalā National Park.

You will learn the basics of color theory, the color wheel, and the many properties of color to be explored in painting, along with the unique properties of acrylic paints and how easy they are to use without worry of mistakes. The class will focus on painting one of Maui’s native forest birds, learning to see shape, color, and texture in a new way, while receiving nurturing, non-judgmental support and encouragement. This introductory course emphasizes the development of basic painting techniques and concepts to build a foundation for developing expressive and representation skills in painting. Reference photos will be provided. All supplies will be provided.

The Huliau Food & Film Festival is a farm-to-table celebration of local agriculture featuring local chefs and student-produced films. This year’s event will be outdoors at Sugar Beach Event’s beautiful oceanfront venue in north Kīhei on Saturday, August 17th. The event will feature student films and a five-course meal featuring farm-to-table dishes prepared by local chefs. Sugar Beach Events will run a cash bar featuring locally produced cocktails, beer, and wine.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Maui Huliau Foundation’s youth programs, which focus on filmmaking, leadership, zero waste, climate change, ʻāina-based education, careers in conservation, and more. Funds will also help support the Kūkulu Pilina (“building connections”) program which works to assist schools in building connections with community partners who can support their educational efforts, and to facilitate more off-campus ʻāina-based experiences for teachers and students. This past school year, they have significantly expanded on our efforts to support teachers and students, especially at Lāhaināluna and the upcountry schools, helping foster a positive learning environment for students.

Her complete project is full of Lahaina and local flavor. Its pages highlight Lahaina Harbor, Front Street, Lahainaʻs Banyan Tree, and more. Mo`o and Koholā comes with three original songs and a website of resources for families and teachers. Lori is extremely thankful to her enthusiastic, talented team which helped bring her project to life. She feels blessed to have worked with Nicki Barsamian who beautifully illustrated her story and helped guide her through the self-publication process. The musicality of Kala`e Camarillo who performed her songs and made them so special was surely a treat for the music lover she is!
